One thing all people strive to be in their lives is remembered. It’s a universal want of pretty much any human being. One way to honor our idols, whether they be chefs or not, is through food. It’s no secret that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. So, to pull at your heartstrings and honor some esteemed individuals, we’ve compiled a list of four upcoming food-related events in metro Detroit that put legacies and the people they belong to at the forefront.

Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent (May 12)

Jeremiah Tower, a name most people outside of the high-profile culinary scene will not recognize, had an incredible influence on not only American cuisine, but food in general. Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent is a documentary, executive-produced by Anthony Bourdain, that chronicles said influence. Starting May 12, Landmark Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak will begin screening the film.

American Coney Island 100th “Coneyversary” (May 18)

Anyone who visits Detroit for the first time and asks for recommendations of things to do undoubtedly is told they MUST get a “real” coney dog. This year is the 100th anniversary of American Coney Island in downtown Detroit. On May 18, the landmark establishment will be hosting festivities from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m. They will also be selling coney dogs for a nickel from 9-10 a.m. and for a dollar from 3-4 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Detroit Police Benefit & Protective Association and the Detroit Firemen’s Benevolent Fund.

Stroh’s® Legend Run (May 21)

The Stroh’s® Legend Run commemorates the history the Stroh’s® brand has in Detroit, its point of origin. Stroh’s® was founded in 1850 in the Motor City and while the company has changed owners and moved around since then, the Legend Run in Corktown honors where the company started. After the 5K run/walk, beer samples, a t-shirt, medal, bottle opener and beer koozie will be handed out to participants.

The Miyazaki Dinners (June 9)

Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary filmmaker from Japan that has a storied career in animated films with universal themes on life, growing old and more. Outside of those themes is something just as important: food. The Miyazaki Dinners, a series of pop-up dinners that aim to honor the filmmaker, will be headed up by chef Jonathan Kung of Kung Food Market in Eastern Market. The first dinner, scheduled for June 9, will be inspired by the film Princess Mononoke. A location will be announced closer to the date.
